Dictionaries, manuals of style, grammar books, thesauri—these guides and conventions allow us to understand and utilize text. These rules developed out of formal systems of use, as well as vernacular use. Video has its own set of conventions and semiotic markers, but these are quickly evolving as more and more people engage with the medium.

Questions To Think About When You Reply:

  • Will video ever have its own style guides and manuals? For which fields and industries?
  • Citations, footnotes, bibliographies—these are the standard tools for establishing veracity in formal textual documents; without these, will video be forever be relegated to the domain of "truthiness"[link to video of Colbert on truthiness"]?
  • Indexes, tables of contents, page numbers—what are their video analogs? These tools offer a non-linear experience of a linear medium; how will we find our way through video content 10 years from now?
